You Get What You Pay For
When you step into your first pair of raw denim jeans, you instantly notice they are a world apart from what you knew as jeans before. Unlike most of the fashion industry, with raw denim, the majority of the time you get what you pay for; not many areas of the fashion industry that can boast that.
A pair of Nudies at €150 will be infinitely better than a pair of high street jeans. A pair of 3sixteen’s at €200 will be incrementally better than the Nudies. And so it goes on.
Improvements in construction, place of manufacture, denim and so on will naturally be reflected in the price, but it will also accurately reflect the quality.
You are not paying some celebrity’s mortgage, becoming a billboard or footing the bill for a huge advertising campaign. You are getting what you have paid for.
Buy Less, Pay More
I always find it amusing to see my friends’ jaws drop when they find out that I dropped €300 on a single pair of jeans.
The usual response will be something like, “you know you can get a pair from Jack & Jones for €80!?” and then they’ll call me a fashion victim or something like that.
But, when I quiz them on the jeans they wear it quickly becomes apparent that I am getting the better deal. It seems totally fine for them to go through a pair in four months – and that’s not even with constant wear. The jeans are disposed of from either falling apart or from changes in fashion.
When I do spend that kind of money on jeans, I know they will last. I know the value per days of wear will be much lower than what my friend who just scoffed at me for spending that kind of money on one single item is getting from his “bargain” jeans.
On top of that, spending €300 or so on a single garment ensures that I can’t do it often. This not only applies to jeans, it applies to all things I buy. It has changed my entire perception of how I consume.
The same friends who critique me for my expensive jeans also comment on how little clothes I have. They presume wrongly that in working in this field I have a vast array of clothing. It’s simply not the case.
When you want something you have to really want it. You have to save for it and you feel like you’ve earned it. It strengthens the bond you make with the garment right from the get go.

Thanks for sharing your experience!
Guess we’re all pretty much on the same page here. Except for the washing part. I’m a “No Washing” advocate, because of the rotation you were so rightly talking about. Got 5-6 different pairs I’ll rotate with so none of them end up smelling like garbage. Always been reluctant and wanted to break in the jeans naturally, and also not mess with the fading. But once again that’s only my experience and point of view! 🙂
Great to read and very known for me as a raw-denim-head. I would advice to add a Lee 101z to your collection. Wonderful jeans with great wear-patterns after several years.
And always repair your jeans if needed. I have on old Lee (around 25 years old) with more than 60 repairs done by me.
Hey there! I know this is somewhat off topic but
I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this
website? I’m getting tired of WordPress because I’ve
had issues with hackers and I’m looking at alternatives for another platform.
I would be fantastic if you could point me in the direction of
a good platform.
