Red Wing Harvester: Meet Your New Favourite Winter Boot

The Leather

My boots came in Amber Harness, a leather also found in the ever popular Iron Ranger, which is renowned for its ability to age and patina beautifully. I had always admired the leather, but the Iron Ranger boot never really caught my imagination.

So far, the oil-tanned leather is picking up a great deal of character. It is retaining its waxy feel but lightening up in the areas where we find the most flexibility and movement. Over the years the leather will darken down with treatment and general wear. I did find the nep on the tongue of the boot slightly rough for the first couple of wears, but this soon beds down.

For me personally, the Amber harness is S.B. Foot Tanning’s best product in terms of potential patina. I am very excited to see how these will evolve.

The Laces

It may seem like a ridiculous thing to get hung up about, but the laces in boots are a make or break point for me. I am delighted to see that the Harvesters come with a same laces as my 877s. These simply do not come undone. In over 3 years I have never had a lace come loose. They also last a good long time. I believe I have replaced them about twice on the 877s. That is pretty good value.

Eyelets and Speed hooks

Another all together practical design decision is the use of the speed hooks to fasten the last few inches of the boots. It allows you to lace them all the way up without the added hassle of threading laces every time you put on your boots. The hooks are full brass on the brown Harvester and extremely solid.

For myself, the sheer practicality of the Harvester will mean that it is not often off my feet. The design of the upper and the more refined soul makes it a boot which can be worn under most circumstances and with any fit of jeans. The Vibram sole keeps the clean look associated with the Iron Ranger, but gives the added grip needed for the winter months.

There is no doubt that the Harvester is bound to be a Red Wing bestseller this winter. The only issue we foresee is that some wearers, especially in warmer climates, will be asking for it in a 6″ version. But you just can’t please all people all the time.
