News From the Archives: The First Levi’s No. 2

Back in March earlier this year, Levi’s historian Lynn Downey acquired a collection of old receipts, credit memos and other financial correspondence from the 1880s and 1890s from a vintage paper dealer. Among the documents was a hand-written letter sent by Levi Strauss & Co. to store owner J. Arata of Vallecito, California, dated June 13, 1890 that advertised the company’s “No. 2 riveted overalls at $7.00 per doz.” This is probably as close as we get to the introduction date of the 201.
